Emergencies are like surprise parties—except no one brought cake, and the only gift is a hefty dose of panic! When your tooth decides to stage a sudden rebellion what you need are the services of the emergency dentist, the saviour with a knack for turning dental disasters into mere inconveniences. With a drill in one hand and a reassuring smile, they tackle your dental drama with the finesse of a maestro and the wit of a late-night comedian. By the end, you are pain-free, slightly sheepish about your snack choice, and convinced that emergency dentists are the true superheroes we never knew we needed.

Emergency dentistry is designed for individuals experiencing acute dental problems that cannot wait for a regular appointment. This includes:

Relieving severe tooth pain from intense dental decay, trauma or abscess

Stabilising broken or knocked-out teeth due to dental trauma resulting in chipped, fractured or dislodged teeth

Alleviating infections and swelling in the mouth or jaw

Treating injuries to the mouth or jaw

Remedying lost dental restorations like crowns or fillings

Arresting bleeding that has continued after a dental procedure

Emergency dentistry at Genix is delivered predominantly through the following methods:

NHS services: the NHS provides emergency dental services through your local Genix Dental Practice. Patients can call NHS 111 for assistance.

Private dentistry: Genix Practices offer emergency appointments, often with same-day availability.

The range of services provided at emergency appointments include an exam, x-rays if necessary, prescription of analgesics and antibiotics if required, and provision of palliative care including pain relief through drainage of abscesses, fillings, root canal treatments and even extractions. It is important to bear in mind that due to the limitations on the clinicians’ time, emergency dentistry primarily focuses on stabilising your condition. You may be required to return for more definitive care once your dental emergency has abated.

For severe cases, hospital emergency rooms can provide initial care and stabilisation.

During emergency dentistry appointments, patients typically experience swift and focused care to address urgent dental issues. The dentist first conducts an assessment to identify the problem, which could range from severe tooth pain, broken teeth, or infections. Immediate pain relief is often prioritized, using local anaesthesia or other pain management techniques. Depending on the issue, the dentist may perform procedures such as extractions, temporary fillings, or draining abscesses. The goal is to stabilize the patient’s condition and provide relief until a more comprehensive treatment plan can be developed. These appointments are crucial for preventing further complications and ensuring the patient’s comfort.

The number of appointments needed for emergency dentistry depends on the severity of the issue:

Single appointment: minor issues such as small fillings or simple extractions can often be resolved in one visit.

Multiple appointments: complex cases like root canals, dental implants, or extensive restorations may require follow-up visits to complete the treatment.

Think of dental sedation as an add-on layer to your overall dental treatment plan. Sedation doesn’t replace, but rather gives a helping hand to other methods of pain control, including local anaesthesia. Your dental procedures are carried out in much the same manner as they would be without sedation, with the exception that they may be clubbed together to avoid repeated sedation administration. Once your dental treatment plan is finalised, preparing for dental sedation involves a few key steps to ensure everything goes smoothly: an in-depth consultation with your dentist to discuss your medical history and any medications you’re taking; and specific instructions that are provided by your dentist and are tailored to your needs for a safe and stress-free experience. The number of appointments required can vary based on the treatment plan, but the typical appointment sequence is as follows:

Appointment 1
Initial consultation to assess the patient’s medical history and determine the appropriate sedation method

↓

Prescribing the medication in case of oral sedation

Appointment 2
Procedure appointment where the dental work is performed under sedation

↓

Short recovery period

↓

Post-operative instructions

↓

You are all sorted!

Follow-up visits may be necessary to monitor recovery and ensure the success of the treatment.

Sedation is possible in dentistry primarily with nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas. Nitrous oxide works by slowing down the nervous system, inducing a sense of calm. When inhaled through a mask, it quickly takes effect within three to five minutes, making patients feel relaxed. This sedation method reduces anxiety and discomfort during medical or dental procedures without fully putting the patient to sleep. Patients remain conscious and responsive, allowing them to follow instructions while experiencing minimal pain and stress. Recovery is quick too, inducing minimal post-operative consequences.

Dentistry played a pivotal role in the discovery and application of nitrous oxide anaesthesia, significantly advancing pain management in both dentistry and general surgery.

Dental sedation is primarily administered via inhalation, and involves breathing in a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen through a mask. Rarely, it may be administered via the oral route—patients take a prescribed sedative pill before the procedure—or intravenous route, wherein sedative drugs are administered directly into the bloodstream through an IV line. General anaesthesia may become necessary in more complex cases, where the patient is put into a deep sleep, and is administered in a hospital set-up under admission.

Unless you were born without teeth—and chances are, you were born with them—you will need to be seen by a dentist at some point in your life. Seeing a dentist when you have a problem with your teeth is a no-brainer. Seeing them even when you think everything is perfect is… wait for it… even brainier! Routine dental check-ups are recommended for everyone, regardless of age or dental health status. They are particularly important for:

Children: to monitor the development of teeth and prevent early dental issues

Adults: to maintain oral health and prevent the progression of dental diseases

Seniors: to address age-related dental problems and maintain overall oral health

Individuals with dental issues: those with a history of dental problems or ongoing treatments

Pregnant women: to monitor oral changes and prevent pregnancy-related dental issues

Unlike most of the bodily issues, your dental problems are rarely likely to get resolved on their own. This means getting your teeth checked on a regular basis is the only way to ensure the dental interventions needed to maintain your teeth are kept to a minimum. Routine dental check-ups offer numerous benefits, including:

Early detection of problems identifying issues like cavities, gum disease, and oral cancer at an early stage

Preventive care with professional cleaning and fluoride application that helps remove plaque and tartar, preventing tooth decay and gum disease

Oral health education to reinforce advice on proper brushing, flossing, and dietary habits

Cost-effectiveness by preventing dental problems saving you money on more extensive treatments in the future

Overall well-being through maintaining good oral health, potentially preventing systemic health issues

With anything that undergoes regular wear-and -tear like your teeth (your car would be another example), getting a routine dental check-up is not a task that you can check off your list once and for all. Good oral health is an ongoing goal, and a marathon, not a sprint. The frequency of routine dental check-ups varies based on individual needs:

General recommendation: every 6 months for most people

High-risk individuals: every 3-6 months for those with existing dental problems or high risk of dental disease

Low-risk individuals: every 9-12 months for those with good oral health

Your mouth is home not only to your teeth and gums, but also to six billion—no, that is not a typo—germs. It takes regular care to maintain it in pristine health. In the end, though, smiling with teeth is always nicer than smiling without them, because smile is a curve that sets everything straight. This is why all this work is definitely worth your while.

While archaeological evidence goes as far back as Roman era, the first ‘modern’ root canal was carried out in 1838, making this an established treatment modality to treat dental infections. Sometimes, there is little need to reinvent the wheel, and that reflects in the broad steps used in root canal treatment. The technology and materials in use have undergone massive advances to make this procedure precise and easy to undergo, while at the same time staying strong with the principles that have stood the test of time.

The process of delivering root canal treatment involves several steps starting with an accurate clinical diagnosis, including the use of x-rays. A small opening is made in the crown of the tooth to access the pulp—under local anaesthesia if necessary. Fine files are then introduced that clean the root canal from within, and using gentle but effective disinfectant solutions, the tooth is washed clear of infection. The tooth is then sealed in its root and crown with appropriate filling materials to prevent reinfection, and covered with a crown if necessary to protect it from high biting forces.

In borderline cases, your dentist may employ pulp-preservation therapies instead of root canal treatment. These include use of materials that promote the pulp to heal and seal itself off from the invading germs. Called ‘direct’ and ‘indirect pulp capping’ procedures, these involve using calcium hydroxide and calcium silicate materials.

Genix dentists make use of multiple advances like the latest nickel-titanium files that flex as per the shape of your root, and the apex locator that accurately gauges the adequacy of cleaning.

Root canal treatments, like all other treatments in dentistry, begin with a detailed check-up to locate the offending tooth. Usually needing at least two appointments after the initial consultation, it may occasionally be possible to complete your root canal treatment in a single visit. Your Genix Dentist will advise you on whether this is suitable. Regardless, your treatment is carried out in a way that is gentlest on your tooth, and delivers the desired results in the quickest possible time-frame.

The workflow for root canal treatments typically has the following steps:

Appointment 1
Clinical history, exam—including vitality tests—and x-rays to diagnose the teeth with issues

↓

Accessing the pulp through the crown under local anaesthesia if necessary

↓

Cleaning the tooth to the best possible extent, followed by placement of medicaments and a dressing if necessary

⤷

Healing period

Appointment 2
Completing the cleaning of the tooth to the tip of its root, verified with an apex locator and x-rays

↓

Root filling, followed by crown filling with biocompatible materials to seal the tooth

↓

Done!

More appointments than two may be required if the infection is extensive. Also, it may be necessary sometime to prescribe antibiotics. Analgesics may be recommended to provide pain relief in the post-operative period.

Your dentist may recommend a crown to protect the tooth and to prolong its life in function if required. You can read more about crowns at Genix here.

Tooth decay—commonly referred to as a ‘cavity’—is the result of germs having a party on your teeth with the sugar you have had, and is the second most common disease after the common cold. Left unchecked, these germs dissolve the tough barriers of enamel and dentine in your teeth to reach the soft beating heart of the tooth: the pulp. Since the pulp is soft, once the germs reach it, they spread very easily and rapidly throughout, including passing down the roots and potentially infecting the area beyond the teeth. Typical symptoms of a tooth that may potentially need root canal treatment include severe throbbing, sharp or shooting pain that lingers—especially on exposure to cold—or spontaneous pain that worsens on lying down at night. Sometimes, it may be difficult to pin-point the tooth that is causing pain, and this in itself is an important sign that indicates that the pulp may be involved.

This scenario quite common owing to the high prevalence of dental decay. As a result, a large number of people require root canal treatment for the following reasons:

Treating severe, deep tooth decay that has reached the pulp of the tooth, causing infection in the tooth and the tissues beyond the teeth

Treating cracked or chipped teeth causing damage that exposes the pulp to bacteria

Managing teeth that have undergone repeated dental procedures leading to pulp damage.

Managing teeth that need to be intentionally devitalised as part of treatment plan in order to receive a crown or to support a bridge

Root canal treatments are not necessarily painful. Modern techniques and anaesthesia make the procedure relatively pain-free.

It is important to adhere to your dentist’s advice for care after the procedure, including getting a permanent filling and/or a crown on the root canal treated tooth.

New decay under crowns of root canal treated teeth will rarely give you pain. This is why it is necessary to monitor root canal treated teeth for symptoms. Report any unusual symptoms, such as swelling or persistent pain, to your dentist immediately.

The fact that a tooth needed root canal treatment itself means that the tooth had extensive damage. Root canal treatment offers these teeth another chance to serve you. In spite of the best attempts to preserve them, they can eventually fail—more so than healthy teeth. This is a normal consequence of their wear-and-tear and needs to be taken into account when setting expectations from this treatment modality.

Root canal treatments are a vital dental procedure for saving infected teeth and maintaining overall oral health. By understanding the process, benefits, and aftercare, patients can ensure successful outcomes and enjoy the long-term health of their natural teeth. Step into your Genix Practice confident in the knowledge that your Genix Dentists are equipped with the best to handle this delicate procedure.

Oral surgery is needed because sometimes our teeth decide to play hide and seek, especially those pesky wisdom teeth that think they’re too wise to come out straight. It’s also for when your jaw decides it wants to audition for a role in a horror movie by misaligning itself. And let’s not forget the times when your mouth decides to grow extra teeth, like it’s trying to win a tooth-growing contest. So, oral surgery steps in to restore order, making sure your mouth doesn’t turn into a dental circus!

Oral surgery is essential for addressing a variety of dental and medical issues that cannot be resolved through general dental care alone, including:

Extracting impacted wisdom teeth that fail to emerge properly, causing pain and infection

Extracting failing teeth damaged by severe tooth decay or extensive fillings and root canal treatment along with crowns, making it difficult to extract them with conventional techniques

Correcting issues arising after tooth extraction like sinus closure procedures and bone grafting

Investigating areas of concern with a biopsy

Improving the foundation areas for dentures within your mouth

Placing dental implants for replacing missing teeth with artificial ones anchored to the jawbone

Treating jaw-related problems such as temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders or unequal jaw growth

Treating facial injuries fractures or injuries to the jaw and facial bones

Addressing obstructive sleep apnoea with surgical interventions to address obstructive sleep apnoea

Oral surgery has a rich history dating back to ancient civilisations. Early evidence of dental procedures can be found in ancient Egypt, where dental extractions and treatments for dental abscesses were performed. The Greeks and Romans also made significant contributions, with Hippocrates and Celsus documenting various dental techniques. During the Middle Ages, barbers often performed dental extractions alongside other minor surgeries. The field advanced significantly in the 19th and 20th centuries with the development of anaesthesia and antiseptic techniques, transforming oral surgery into a specialised and respected branch of medicine. Today, oral surgery encompasses a wide range of procedures, from simple extractions to complex reconstructive surgeries.

The delivery of oral surgery treatments involves several steps starting with consultation and diagnosis. The initial assessment includes an examination and imaging (x-rays, CT scans) to diagnose the issue. This is followed by development of a personalised treatment plan based on the diagnosis. The surgical procedures then involve tooth extraction, bone grafting, implant placement, or jaw realignment, and are done under appropriate anaesthesia. Post-operative care includes providing instructions for recovery and follow-up appointments to monitor healing.

For ease of understanding, you may consider the procedures that are carried out in a dental setting as simple ones, and those that need hospital admission to be the more complex ones. Genix offers support for procedures that can be performed within our surgeries.

Simpler oral surgical procedures like extractions and biopsies are typically completed in one appointment. Dental implants may require multiple appointments for placement, healing, and restoration. Corrective jaw surgery often involves several pre-operative consultations, the surgery itself, and multiple follow-up visits, and may often be carried out in hospital settings. Complex procedures such as facial reconstruction, may require a series of appointments for comprehensive treatment.

Periodontal disease is often pain-free. This silent disease often goes undetected until a dentist, dental therapist or a dental hygienist notices it, and recommends action. Once the teeth loose their attachment in gums and bone, it is not reversible. This means when it comes to gum disease, prevention is literally better than cure because a cure doesn’t exist. Regular follow-ups—even when everything seems healthy—are key to keeping gum disease at bay. Over-the-counter oral health products like mouthwash can merely be adjuncts to the treatment for gum disease, and are best used only on your dentist’s recommendation.

Here are some indications for which you need a hygiene visit:

Cleaning visible build-up on teeth that won’t come off after using a toothbrush

Treating bleeding gums

Treating swollen and tender gums

Correcting bad breath

Wobbly teeth that are developing spaces because they have started to wander off from their original position are signs of advanced gum disease, and you may not only need the regular hygiene services, but also more advanced treatment.

Smokers are at a significantly higher risk of gum disease, and may not even show bleeding on brushing until the gum disease has progressed significantly. Gum disease also has familial tendency. Smokers and those with a family history of gum disease should therefore be even more vigilant. Finally, some medications, medical conditions like diabetes and hormone alterations that take place during pregnancy can exacerbate gum disease.

Our mouth is home to as many germs as there are humans on earth—about 6 billion! These bacteria collect at gum line in an invisible film called ‘plaque’. Much like a greasy dish, this can be scrubbed cleaned with your toothbrush. Gums start getting inflamed and infected in the areas where it isn’t removed, and can eventually come away from the tooth, forming a ‘pocket’. This starts a vicious circle of inability to clean the plaque from deep inside the pockets with your toothbrush, which in turn leads to even more loss of gum attachment, letting plaque creep and accumulate deeper and deeper below the gum line. Some of the plaque that is not cleaned mineralises to form hard build-up called ‘tartar’. While you can see tartar on your teeth, you can’t clean it with a toothbrush since it is attached to the tooth firmly, which means bacteria always find a safe place to harbour themselves, perpetuating the gum infection. Over time, the bone in the gums starts dissolving, leading to loss of tooth support.

Traditionally, scaling involved the use of purpose-designed hand instruments that allowed the hygienist to clean the tartar from the tooth surface. Newer technology involves the use of sonic and ultrasonic tips that gently pick the tartar off your teeth, with microbubbles in the water stream that drive the debris away from the tooth surface getting cleaned. Air polish builds on this to deliver a gentle stream of specially formulated powders under air and water pressure—think if it as giving your teeth a pressure wash!

No sensitivity during scaling? Really?

We hear you! No one fancies the dreadful prospect of sitting on the dental chair with their knuckles all white due to the sensitivity from their teeth getting cleaned. This is why Genix has invested in advanced technology ultrasonic scalers that are so gentle that even recessed gumline with exposed roots can be cleaned without significant discomfort. Hygiene appointments, unlike many other dental procedures, are not a one-time event. It helps our patients immensely to have the peace of mind in knowing that they will be able to maintain their oral hygiene to high standards time-and-time-again without getting anxious.

Why is air polishing better?

Air polishing uses a slurry under air-pressure to clean your teeth. It is gentle on both your tooth enamel and your tooth root, and works without compromising the integrity of tooth surface. Since it doesn’t generate heat or doesn’t involve application of pressure to your teeth, it is comfortable compared to conventional methods. Another advantage is that it can reach under the gums even when there are pockets, delivering effective biofilm removal all-around. Stains on teeth from tobacco chewing or smoking, red wine, black coffee or tea and long-term use of chlorhexidine mouthwash can be thoroughly and efficiently cleaned with air polish since it can target those hard-to-reach nooks and crannies. This means you can smile your brightest quickly, and without discomfort.

A lot of times, dentists will recommend getting your teeth air polished before you start teeth whitening to ensure the best results for you.

Smoking cessation and keeping generally healthy (including good blood-sugar control if you are a diabetic) will ensure good gum health in the long run. Good gum health, in its turn, has been proven to be of benefit in improving some general health conditions (which is especially true for diabetes).

Avoiding excessive consumption of too many strongly-coloured substances in your diet, and limiting your use of stain-inducing mouthwashes will keep the teeth stain-free for longer.

It may surprise you to learn that your oral cavity is a bustling metropolis of microscopic organisms. Indeed, a variety of bacteria call your mouth home. Some of these tiny inhabitants contribute positively to your oral health. However, others can be quite detrimental. These harmful bacteria feast on the sugars and starches in your diet, producing acids as a byproduct. These acid-secreting bacteria are capable of two destructive actions. Initially, they can erode the enamel, the glossy exterior of your tooth. If these bacteria continue their destructive behaviour unchecked, they can lead to the formation of dental cavities. They burrow into the deeper structures of your tooth, resulting in discomfort, pain and difficulty eating the foods you enjoy.

Cavities—known as ‘dental caries’ in scientific jargon—should not be taken lightly. If a cavity is not addressed promptly, it can wreak havoc on your tooth and infect the sensitive nerves housed within it, potentially leading to the formation of an abscess, a localized infection at the end of the root. When an abscess comes into existence, the only recourse for treatment involves procedures such as a root canal, surgical intervention, or the removal of the affected tooth.

Tooth decay can impact anyone possessing teeth. Nonetheless, certain demographics are more likely to experience cavities. These include: children and teenagers due to elements like eating habits and practices of oral cleanliness; older adults due to aspects such as diminished enamel strength, challenges in brushing, and decreased saliva generation leading to dry mouth; people who consume edibles and beverages that stick to the teeth for extended periods, or those who frequently snack or sip; and individuals with genetic predispositions that render their teeth more prone to deterioration. Cavities can also develop beneath dental restorations like fillings, crowns, and bridges. Hence, it’s vital for everyone to maintain excellent oral hygiene, maintain a good diet, and have regular dental examinations, irrespective of their age or genetic factors. Fillings offer treatment for the following types of cavities:

Restoring coronal cavities that are usually located on chewing surfaces or between the teeth

Filling root surface decay that is common after gum recession

Remedying recurrent decay that can form around existing dental work

Fillings—especially cosmetic fillings—can be used to treat chipped or cracked teeth. More information on this can be found under composite bonding.

While technology and material advancements have radically changed how successfully tooth decay can be treated, the goals and advantages of fillings have largely remained the same:

Restoration of the natural form and structure of the damaged and decayed tooth

Removal and arrest of infection from the tooth

Prevention of further decay of the tooth by sealing off spaces where bacteria can enter

There isn’t a universal solution when it comes to dental fillings. Your unique circumstances, such as the severity of the tooth damage, potential allergic reactions to specific substances, the location of the required filling in your oral cavity, and your budget, will dictate the most suitable choice for you.

When your dentist administers a filling, the process involves first clearing the decayed material from the tooth, sanitising the impacted region, and subsequently filling the now-clean cavity with a suitable filling substance.

A variety of materials can be used to deliver dental restorations, each offering unique benefits and drawbacks:

Gold

These are individually fabricated in a laboratory using gold alloys and then affixed to the tooth. They are generally well-accepted by the gums and can have a lifespan of over two decades. They require multiple visits, however, and can be highly costly to make.

Amalgam

Also called ‘silver’ restorations, these fillings are made of a silver-tin-mercury alloy that is mixed just before placing it in the cavity. Time-honoured for their durability and cost-effectiveness, their dark hue makes them conspicuous, rendering them not suitable for use in highly visible locations.

Composite

Colour-matched to your teeth, these fillings use a material that combines silica-quartz fillers in a resin matrix, and are bonded to teeth using special adhesive systems. Composite restorations are preferred when aesthetics is a priority, but significant material advancements mean they can be used even in the back teeth thanks to the strength of the newer products. They might not be the best choice for extensive restorations as they can chip or degrade over time, and your dentist will discuss these considerations with you if relevant.

Glass Ionomer

Sometimes referred to as ‘cement’ fillings, these are coloured to match the tooth and are composed of silica glass powder.

Ceramic

Also referred to as inlays or onlays, these are custom-made in a laboratory and then adhered to the tooth. They can be colour-matched to the tooth and are resistant to discolouration.

In the event of significant tooth damage from decay or a break, the application of a dental cap, also referred to as a crown, could be advised.

Depending on whether your filling needs to be made in a lab, or whether it is directly created in your mouth on the affected tooth, you may need more than one appointment for your filling. As with all procedures in dentistry, fillings begin with a thorough history and exam that may involve x-rays to assess the extent and depth of decay to formulate the appropriate treatment plan. Once it has been confirmed that the tooth can indeed be salvaged with a filling, and won’t need any other treatment like root canal therapy, consideration is given to the type of material to be used.

After clearing the decayed material from the tooth—usually under local anaesthesia—your dentist will proceed to place the filling in your tooth. In case of a lab-made filling, an impression is made to record the shape of the tooth, and the filling is cemented in the tooth in a subsequent visit.

Maintaining your natural teeth, whenever possible, is the best way to allow for efficient eating and chewing and to maintain the overall structure of your mouth and face. Fillings, crowns and bridges, dental implants and dentures are some ways this is attempted. However, from time-to-time, teeth affected beyond repair with dental decay or gum disease become unsalvageable. Left untreated, these teeth can infect the jaw and create a painful abscess. In all these situations, extractions become necessary to prevent further complications and pain.

Trouble-causing third molars—wisdom teeth—that are hindered from erupting fully may need surgical extractions.

Apart from the pain- and infection-related reasons, sometimes extractions may be planned as part of orthodontic treatment as a space-gaining measure. The following points list the most common reasons for dental extraction:

Unlike what a lot of people believe, our teeth are not directly anchored within bone. A very tiny space separates the roots of our teeth from the bone that surrounds them. Within this space are miniature fibres that connect the tooth to the jawbone. Extraction of teeth becomes possible because of this unique structural arrangement which enables the dentist to loosen teeth by separating this ligamentous tooth attachment.

Tooth extraction always begins with administration of anaesthesia to numb the area around the tooth. This is followed by tooth loosening using special tools to release the fibres connecting it to the bone. The loosened tooth is then elevated from the socket. For impacted teeth, the dentist may need to remove gum tissue and bone before loosening and extracting them. The dentist then uses dental forceps with controlled pressure to progressively release the tooth from its socket and surrounding bone to deliver it outside the oral cavity.

After removing the tooth, the dentist applies pressure to the tooth socket to arrest bleeding.

More complex cases may be referred to oral surgeons or periodontists. Also, sedation may be used in some cases to help the person relax during the procedure.

Technology has enabled creation of ever-sophisticated tools that are far gentler than the ones used in past, and as a result, the process of tooth removal can usually be comfortably tolerated.

Dental extraction is a single-appointment procedure, but will almost always be preceded by an appointment to take a detailed dental and medical history, along with a thorough exam. It is very helpful to discuss any concerns you may have with your Genix Practice—including those around anxiety—and to explore the need for sedation. Another valuable exercise is to consider how you wish to replace the missing tooth even before you have undergone the extraction: crowns and bridges, dental implants and dentures. Just ask your Genix Practice to get you in touch with our helpful Treatment Coordinator, and they will be happy to discuss this further.

The appointment for your tooth extraction may be followed by a check-up to make sure everything is going smoothly, and sometimes to remove stitches if necessary. You can reach us if you have any concerns in the days after your treatment.

Imagine a tiny construction crew inside your mouth, complete with miniature hard hats and tool belts. They start by setting up scaffolding around the tooth that needs the crown, chatting about the latest dental gossip. The foreman, usually a wise old molar, directs the team to carefully measure the space. Then, they mix up a batch of tooth-coloured cement, making sure not to spill any on their tiny boots. As they place the dental crown, they high-five each other with their tiny hands, celebrating a job well done. Finally, they pack up their tools, leaving behind a perfectly crafted crown and a note saying: ‘Thanks for the gig! Keep flossing!’

The multi-step process for making crowns includes the following steps usually covered across multiple appointments:

Appointment 1 or more
A thorough exam of the gums of the severely damaged tooth that need to be restored with crowns, the structure, support and integrity of that tooth, and x-rays if necessary

↓

Discussion of the treatment plan to arrive at the material of choice for the crown

↓

Correction of gum health and structure of the supporting tooth if necessary

↓

Recording the shade of the tooth

↓

Shaping of the tooth to receive a crown

↓

Recording an impression of the shaped tooth and registering the bite

⤷

Manufacture of the crown in our state-of-the-art lab partners’ facilities

Appointment 2 or beyond
Trying the crown in your mouth for fit, bite, comfort and aesthetics

↓

Making adjustments if necessary and polishing the crown. Sometimes this involves sending the crown back to the lab

↓

Cementing the crown in your mouth securely and permanently

↓

You are all set!

Time to flex your newfound chewing power! Remember to follow the post-operative instructions carefully to prolong the life of your crown.

⁃ A crack

⁃ A fracture

⁃ Substantial chipping not corrigible with simpler treatments like composite bonding

⁃ Little remaining tooth structure

⁃ Past root canal treatment

With a long history of innovation in the technology and materials that are used to manufacture crowns and bridges, your Genix dentists are more empowered than ever to deliver a precise and aesthetic replacement that serves you in the long run. Genix partners with dental labs that share our values when it comes to creating high-quality treatment outcomes, and that collaborate with our dentists closely to tailor your crown to your unique situation.

Making a crown involves creating space for the material from which they will be made. Depending on your clinical situation, your Genix dentist will present to you the treatment possibilities that are appropriate to restore your aesthetics and function. Once you have chosen the material you would like your crown to be made out of, your dentist will shape the teeth to receive the crown keeping in mind the specific requirements for that material. An impression or a scan of your teeth is then taken to prepare a model of your jaw, and your bite is recorded.

The dental lab then prepares your bespoke crown. Once the crown is trialled for the fit, bite, appearance and comfort, it is cemented securely in your mouth.

You may be offered the following types of crowns based on the material used:

Metal

The time-honoured choice to make a strong, long-lasting restoration, metal crowns are made of a variety of purpose-created metal alloys. These include alloys that contain gold or other precious metals like platinum or palladium, as well as non-precious metal alloys that contain nickel and chromium. A particularly great choice in back teeth where space is tight or when the bite is heavy, metal crowns are most appropriate in areas that are aesthetically not very critical due to their metallic appearance. The dental lab employs different methods to make these: traditional casting, metal-laser-sintering and milling.

Porcelain-fused-to-metal

Occupying the middle ground with tooth-like appearance and strength from the metal in them, porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns—also sometimes known as porcelain-bonded-to-metal crowns—are created by layering porcelain on a metal substructure. This unique combination is put to use not only in the back teeth, but also sometimes in the front teeth. Due to the need to mask the metal, these crowns are not as translucent as teeth. This opacity limits their use in aesthetically sensitive areas.

All-ceramic

All-ceramic crowns—also called all-porcelain crowns—are made of specialty tooth-coloured ceramics of different varieties, and hence can offer life-like aesthetic appearance thanks to their translucency which approaches that of the natural teeth. The different types of ceramics used include lithium disilicate (e.g. e.max®), alumina-reinforced (e.g. Procera®) and zirconia (Lava®, BruxZir®). They excel in different areas: some are better cosmetically; some are stronger than others. Your Genix dentist will help you arrive at which one is best for you.

Temporary crowns

Until your permanent crown is cemented in your mouth, it may be necessary to provide a provisional replacement to ensure that the shaped teeth are held in place and to take care of possible sensitivity. Temporary crowns made of materials like acrylic and composite are useful for this purpose, and sometimes may be made chairside by the dentist themselves. They are cemented with temporary cements to allow easy retrieval when the permanent restoration is to be placed.
