When it comes to implant dentistry, it is rarely a one-size-fits-all approach. No two patients—not even two sites in the same mouth—are the same. For a definitive procedure like dental implants, your Genix Implant Expert will carefully assess your medical and dental health, and create your personalised treatment plan.

Treatment planning for dental implants will typically include:

an exam,

a non-invasive three-dimensional x-ray of your jaws and teeth called a CBCT scan, and

sometimes impressions or optical scans to make a model of your jaws and teeth.

Data from these pain-free procedures then allows your Genix Implant Expert to balance your personal preferences and choices to present to you all the possibilities that you have for your teeth replacement. In the majority of the situations, the precise length, width and type of dental implant, along with the type of crown you will receive on top of it for you is planned to the smallest detail long before the actual procedure: no guessing games here!

Apart from ensuring the accuracy of your implant-supported restorations, these appointments allow you to get detailed, in-depth answers to all the queries that you may have. Remember: no questions are silly! Also remember: your Genix TCO is your always-at-hand point-of-contact that is there with you throughout your 5-star Journey with Genix Implant Dentistry.

Once you have finalised the treatment plan, the process of restoring your missing teeth with implants is completed in the following straightforward steps:

Appointment 1
Placement of implant under local anaesthesia

(Genix also offers sedation for a calming experience. Ask your Genix Implant Expert)

↓

Connecting a temporary crown/bridge/denture/closure-cap to the implant

⤷

Healing for six weeks to six months

Appointment 2 and 3
Connecting a gum-builder if necessary, followed by healing for two weeks

(This step is often not necessary since the gums are usually already built in the previous step)

↓

Making impressions, recording bite and taking shade

↓

Taking a trial of the final lab-manufactured bespoke crown/bridge/denture to ensure you like the shape, shade and bite

↓

Permanently attaching the final crown/bridge

↓

All done!

Sometimes, more than one trial may be needed.

Further adjustments to the crown/bridge/denture may be necessary in subsequent appointments.

Dentures are made using a variety of biocompatible materials that have the ability to be moulded to a shape that confirms to the foundation of gums—and teeth in case of partial dentures—in your mouth. These materials can range from advanced resins to purpose-created metal alloys. From flexible to rigid, different situations warrant the use of materials appropriate to the conditions in your mouth.

A variety of measurements are taken to precisely register your jaws and bite using super-accurate recording materials. Your dentist at Genix then closely collaborates with the dental lab to create a set of dentures that best suits your jaws and face. Plenty of trials allow you to express your preferences in terms of the appearance and comfort.

The end-result is a cosmetic and optimally-functioning dental replacement that makes you smile every time you put it on.

Acrylic dentures

Chances are, what you imagine when you think about ‘dentures’ are ones that are made from acrylic. Time-tested and often repairable, the vast majority of dentures in clinical use are acrylic dentures thanks to the balance they are able to strike between strength, aesthetics and affordability. Your Genix dentist collaborates closely with Genix’s highly-skilled lab partners to deliver acrylic dentures made from advanced and high-quality materials.

Chrome dentures

Chrome dentures are a type of partial denture with a metal framework supporting acrylic gums and teeth, and hence are referred to scientifically as ‘cast-partial dentures’. Strong even when thin due to the strength of the metal, these dentures can be incredibly lightweight. The strength of the metal can sometimes permit covering less of the gums and palate, thus maintaining your taste and smell of food. Because metals conduct heat, you always retain the sensation of how hot or cold your food is. They are also less likely to transfer bite forces on the remaining teeth, and as a result, may be recommended by your Genix dentist for partial dentures.

Flexible dentures

Partial denture patients who are looking to avoid the appearance of metal in their mouth now have the option to choose flexible dentures—called so in a nod to their bendability. They are made up of thermoplastic materials like nylon, and offer aesthetically pleasing appearance. Bear in mind that they may not be suitable in all patients, especially if the teeth that support them have lost support. Your Genix dentist will evaluate and let you know if these will work in your mouth.

Overdentures

Using strategically located sound and firm teeth, overdentures enhance the functionality of your acrylic or chrome dentures. This not only enhances the support and retention of your dentures, but also preserve the sense of proprioception—the sense that lets you feel the texture of the food you bite into, protecting your tissues from overly hard food or coarse food particles. In addition, overdentures also help maintain bone around the teeth that they rest on.

Immediate dentures

Transitioning to dentures can be challenging, especially if you wish to stay socially active even while the treatment is ongoing. Immediate dentures—sometimes called temporary dentures—at Genix are a treatment that is designed to allow our patients to get their new teeth on the same day on which they get their teeth extracted. This requires prior planning and preparation, and the dentures need to be refreshed from inside from time-to-time in order to maintain a good fit on the changing foundation as the gums heal under them. These almost always need rebasing/replacing once the gum denture foundation has become firm.

The process of making dentures has been honed to perfection over the last few decades, with refinements and tweaks that incorporate technological and material advances. Your Genix dentist will begin this process with one simple imperative: to preserve what is salvageable. The specific treatment choice you make is usually arrived at in collaboration with your dentist, and is the denture type that is best able to meet your treatment objectives in the long run with minimal intervention.

Making precise dentures takes careful construction, and usually involves the following broad steps:

Appointment 1
Assessment of the health of the remaining teeth if any, and the health of your gum denture foundation if there are no teeth left

↓

Discussion of your treatment goals

↓

Taking x-rays and making jaw models if necessary

⤷

Restoring the remaining teeth to health, and bolstering the gum denture foundation if necessary

Appointment 2 to 6
Various jaw impressions that record your gum denture foundation precisely

↓

Jaw articulation records that capture the way your lower jaw works with your upper jaw

↓

Trial(s) of the denture if necessary

↓

Denture delivery!

Dentures are new devices that you are not accustomed to, and like any new appliance that you start using for the first time, there is a ‘breaking-in’ period in which you may need to visit your dentist for easing your dentures in. We understand this, and your Genix dentist will be happy to schedule regular reviews to make sure you are on the right track with getting used to your new dentition.

If you are a partial denture wearer, special attention needs to be paid to keeping the teeth that remain clean and plaque-free. These are more prone to accumulation of debris, and as a result can develop cavities and gum disease.

Just like your natural teeth, the strength of your denture teeth needs to be considered before you bite into your food to avoid the risk of denture cracks and fractures.

Storing your dentures appropriately when you are not using them is critical for their longevity and stability.

Loss of even a single tooth can cause significant degradation in the overall integrity of your dentition over time. The neighbouring teeth may shift, leading to creation of spaces—sometimes in teeth far from the site of tooth loss. Teeth in the opposite jaw may erupt above the rest of the teeth, which can complicate replacement at a later date.

Apart from these local effects, missing teeth can have an impact on your smile and your facial appearance, which affects the ease with which you interact socially. In addition, loss of teeth can reduce how well you can chew your food, which may compromise nutrition and your overall well-being in the long run. All these issues can reduce your oral-health-related quality-of-life.

To summarise, regardless of how many teeth are missing from your mouth, you should consider getting dentures at your local Genix Practice to bring about the following significant improvements:

Managing an ageing smile due to loss of teeth

Correcting age changes in the face because of loss of teeth

Enhancing the chewing efficiency that is reduced due to missing teeth, including the avoidance of certain foods from the diet

Restoring the lost confidence to socialise due to a lack of satisfaction with your smile

If you have been missing teeth since a while and the adjacent teeth have moved, some additional steps may be necessary before a partial denture can be constructed for you.

Getting used to wearing dentures can take a while, just like adjusting to a new pair of reading glasses. Practising with patience and regular follow-ups with your dentist are key to making this process easier for yourself.

Your gums are the foundation on which your dentures rest, and your gums will keep remodelling naturally over time. This means your dentures will need to be refreshed if their fit is affected beyond a certain degree.

Just like the tyres of your car wear down with use, your dentures do as well, and will need to be replaced if the wear is significant.

If your gums are sore under your denture, a quick visit to see your dentist at Genix to ease the denture should not be delayed.

In some situations, you may benefit significantly if additional support is obtained through the use of existing teeth, or with the placement of implants at strategic locations. You can read more about teeth-supported overdentures and implant-supported overdentures on our website.

Good oral health is a vital component of active ageing. With the accurate dentures on offer at the Genix Practice near you, you no longer need to let missing teeth be a barrier from participating in life fully! Please get in touch with us to know more.

Research indicates that fixed replacements, deliver greater improvement in the oral-health-related-quality-of-life compared to removable replacements.

Bridges use crowns which are secured on the neighbouring teeth as bolsters or pillars that attach to the replacement of missing teeth that literally helps ‘bridge’ the gap. As such, bridges have straightforward indications in the following situations:

Definitively replacements for short- to medium-span edentulous spaces

Correction of lost aesthetics due to missing front teeth

Enhancing the smile to improve dental alignment in presence of tooth loss

Restoring chewing capacity that has reduced due to missing front and back teeth

With a long history of innovation in the technology and materials that are used to manufacture crowns and bridges, your Genix dentists are more empowered than ever to deliver a precise and aesthetic replacement that serves you in the long run. Genix partners with dental labs that share our values when it comes to creating high-quality treatment outcomes, and that collaborate with our dentists closely to tailor your bridge to your unique situation.

Making a bridge involves creating space for the material from which they will be made. Depending on your clinical situation, your Genix dentist will present to you the treatment possibilities that are appropriate to restore your aesthetics and function. Once you have chosen the material you would like your bridge to be made out of, your dentist will shape the teeth to receive the bridge keeping in mind the specific requirements for that material. An impression or a scan of your teeth is then taken to prepare a model of your jaw, and your bite is recorded.

The dental lab then prepares your bespoke bridge. Once the bridge is trialled for the fit, bite, appearance and comfort, it is cemented securely in your mouth.

You may be offered the following types of bridges:

Types of bridges based on the material used

Metal

The time-honoured choice to make a strong, long-lasting restoration, metal bridges are made of a variety of purpose-created metal alloys. These include alloys that contain gold or other precious metals like platinum or palladium, as well as non-precious metal alloys that contain nickel and chromium. A particularly great choice in back teeth where space is tight or when the bite is heavy, metal bridges are most appropriate in areas that are aesthetically not very critical due to their metallic appearance. The dental lab employs different methods to make these: traditional casting, metal-laser-sintering and milling.

Porcelain-fused-to-metal

Occupying the middle ground with tooth-like appearance and strength from the metal in them, porcelain-fused-to-metal bridges—also sometimes known as porcelain-bonded-to-metal bridges—are created by layering porcelain on a metal substructure. This unique combination is put to use not only in the back teeth, but also sometimes in the front teeth. Due to the need to mask the metal, these bridges are not as translucent as teeth. This opacity limits their use in aesthetically sensitive areas.

All-ceramic

All-ceramic bridges—also called all-porcelain bridges—are made of specialty tooth-coloured ceramics of different varieties, and hence can offer life-like aesthetic appearance thanks to their translucency which approaches that of the natural teeth. The different types of ceramics used include lithium disilicate (e.g. e.max®), alumina-reinforced (e.g. Procera®) and zirconia (Lava®, BruxZir®). They excel in different areas: some are better cosmetically; some are stronger than others. Your Genix dentist will help you arrive at which one is best for you.

Types of bridges based on tooth coverage

Conventional bridges

Conventional bridges refer to replacements for missing teeth that are suspended between two or more crowns on either side. These are secured with the help of strongly adherent cements on the teeth that receive the crowns. The material choices for conventional bridges are the same as those available for crowns: metal, porcelain-fused-to-metal, and all-ceramic. In case of bridges, however, additional considerations are needed for the extra forces that the restorations are subject to, and that fine tunes the material choice.

Resin-bonded bridges

The minimally-invasive option when you want a bridge, a resin-bonded—or ‘adhesive’ or ‘resin-retained’ or ‘Maryland’—bridge makes use of small metal wings that are bonded with a special cement to the inner surface of the adjacent teeth. Sometimes, it is possible to prepare this bridge with minimal or no tooth shaping, which makes this the most conservative option. This design is especially useful in the front teeth with a gentle bite.

Temporary crowns and bridges

Until your permanent crown and bridge is cemented in your mouth, it may be necessary to provide a provisional replacement to ensure that the shaped teeth are held in place and to take care of possible sensitivity. Temporary crowns and bridges made of materials like acrylic and composite are useful for this purpose, and sometimes may be made chairside by the dentist themselves. They are cemented with temporary cements to allow easy retrieval when the permanent restoration is to be placed.

Imagine a tiny construction crew inside your mouth, complete with miniature hard hats and tool belts. They start by setting up scaffolding around the gap where your tooth used to be, chatting about the latest dental gossip. The foreman, usually a wise old molar, directs the team to carefully measure the space. Then, they mix up a batch of tooth-coloured cement, making sure not to spill any on their tiny boots. As they place the dental bridge, they high-five each other with their tiny hands, celebrating a job well done. Finally, they pack up their tools, leaving behind a perfectly crafted bridge and a note saying: ‘Thanks for the gig! Keep flossing!’

The multi-step process for making crowns and bridges includes the following steps usually covered across multiple appointments:

Appointment 1 or more
A thorough exam of the gums of the missing teeth, the support and integrity of adjacent teeth that the bridge may potentially rest on, and x-rays if necessary

↓

Discussion of the treatment plan to arrive at the material of choice for the crown and bridge

↓

Correction of gum health and structure of the supporting teeth if necessary

↓

Recording the shade of the teeth

↓

Shaping of the teeth to receive a crown or a bridge

↓

Recording an impression of the shaped teeth and registering the bite

↪

Manufacture of the bridge in our state-of-the-art lab partners’ facilities

Appointment 2 or beyond
Trying the bridge in your mouth for fit, bite, comfort and aesthetics

↓

Making adjustments if necessary and polishing the bridge. Sometimes this involves sending the bridge back to the lab

↓

Cementing the bridge in your mouth securely and permanently

↓

You are all set!

Time to flex your newfound chewing power! Remember to follow the post-operative instructions carefully to prolong the life of your bridge.

A dental bridge is like a tiny suspension bridge in your mouth, except it doesn’t charge tolls and keeps your smile traffic-free! Crucial for maintaining oral health and functionality after tooth loss, it helps restore your smile, enabling you to chew and speak properly. By filling the gap left by missing teeth, a dental bridge prevents the remaining teeth from shifting out of position, which can lead to bite problems and jaw pain. Additionally, it helps maintain the shape of your face, providing support to the surrounding teeth and gums. Proper care of a dental bridge ensures its longevity and contributes to overall dental hygiene. Begin your journey to get your teeth replaced at Genix now!

Almost anyone with missing teeth can receive implants—that includes single, multiple or all missing teeth—and that is regardless of the reason for tooth loss: sporting injury, accident, dental cavities and even pathologies.

When it comes to dental implants, age is no bar: adults of all ages with good general and oral health can and do get dental implants, whether they’re in their 30s or 70s.

Implant-supported teeth are firmly secured, and require no more than regular maintenance. They have also been shown to have very high success rates in the UK—as high as 95%—so they have a potential to last very long! For anyone who desires the quality-of-life improvements that a healthy dentition can bring, dental implants represent an investment worth considering. Below is a list of some situations in which implants can work well:

Replacing missing front tooth or teeth

Replacing missing back tooth or teeth

Replacing all missing teeth

Improving removable partial or complete denture-wearers

Improving existing crowns and bridges that are unsatisfactory

Replacing chipped or cracked teeth that are broken beyond repair

Replacing grossly decayed teeth that are not salvageable

Replacing root-canal treated teeth that are breaking down

Implant-supported restorations come in a number of designs. Your Genix Dental Team will perform a thorough assessment of your mouth and discuss the treatment options that work the best for you.

No pain? Really??

First things first! A lot of people think that the procedure to insert a device that looks like a screw must be painful. The reality, however, is that most patients feel very little discomfort—usually in the period immediately after the surgery—and others are able to manage the minor discomfort at home with simple painkillers. This is mainly thanks to the specialised equipment and technology that is used in implant dentistry, which minimises the surgical morbidity and speeds up recovery.

Implants are your third dentition!

After losing your milk teeth, loss of your permanent teeth usually meant that one had to rely on support from gums or remaining adjacent natural teeth to replace teeth, or choose to leave a gap and live with it. With the advent of implants, for the first time in the history of humankind, we now have an opportunity to replace missing permanent teeth with bio-friendly root replacements. This means no more reliance on remaining teeth or gums to support the replacement. If you think about it, this is really as close to nature as we have ever been: a root supporting its tooth crown.

Bespoke, all the way

Once the root replacements are placed in the form of your titanium dental implants, depending on the type of replacement planned, over the span of a few appointments, a tailor-made crown, bridge or denture is attached to the implant. This is usually done once the implant has healed and become firm. Depending on the kind of restoration, different types of sturdy and biocompatible screws are used to secure the replacements.

Same-day or later, the timelines are always convenient

There are several types of implant-supported replacements, with varying timelines depending on your requirements and the conditions in your mouth—your Genix Implant Expert will inform you about the best options after a consultation. Here are some possible options:

Same-day teeth

Same-day teeth refer to replacement that you go home with on the same day you receive your implant. They usually require some pre-procedural planning, and can be in the form of a temporary crowns and dentures connected to the implant. Apart from the fact that they offer the convenience of fewer appointments, same-day teeth also mean not having to be without teeth for even a day: something especially helpful for our patients with keen aesthetic requirements.

Standard implant-supported teeth

Standard protocols for implant-supported teeth involve either one- or two-step journey. The two-step procedure includes a healing period anywhere from six weeks to six months before the replacement teeth are connected to the implant. In the one-step procedure, the missing teeth are replaced in the same appointment as the implant installation (or within a maximum of 72 hours). On occasions, it is possible to club removal of a tooth or tooth root, place the implant and connect a replacement for the missing teeth all in the same appointment: this is called ‘immediate’ implant placement, and your Genix Implant Expert will advise you on whether this is a suitable option for you.

Implants are not expensive

While the up-front cost associated with implants can be more than the conventional methods to replace missing teeth, they may often really be the best today’s dentistry can offer you in your situation. Knowing how long they last, their excellent functioning and appearance means they have become the standard of care in many parts of the world. The proven improvements they bring to the Oral Health-related Quality of Life (OHRQoL) allows dentists to recommend them to their patients, recognising that the investment made in getting them is likely to be felt worthwhile in the long run.

At Genix, we have spared no effort to ensure that costs should be last reason why our patients feel implants are out of their reach. Genix offers the ease of spreading the payments across months thanks to our convenient payment plans. Remember to ask your Genix Treatment Coordinator (TCO) if you wish to explore these possibilities.

Fixed- and fixed-removable replacements that stay secure in place, giving you confidence when eating, speaking and smiling

Conservation of remaining teeth since they don’t have to be trimmed down to support a bridge

Preservation of your natural bone structure

Aesthetically pleasing and low-maintenance restorations

Restorations that last for a long time

Preservation of health of the remaining teeth since the implant-based replacements don’t take support from them. Conventional teeth replacements can increase the chances of decay or loosening in the remaining teeth that support them.

Your implants need meticulous maintenance at home, and regular professional inspections in your follow-ups. Purpose-designed brushes and other tools may be prescribed to you to make this easy. This is usually very easily learned, and can be effortlessly incorporated in your day-to-day routine.

As always, ensuring good oral hygiene with twice-a-day brushing with a fluoride toothpaste and interdental cleaning with floss helps a lot.

Your implant-supported teeth are very strong and can withstand large loads. It helps to keep in mind, however, that whatever you wouldn’t bite and chew with your natural teeth is best avoided with implants too. This includes really hard nuts, candy, and please… use a bottle opener for the wine, will you?

Smoking and existing gum disease pose a risk to the long-term health of implants, and will need to be corrected prior to placement of implants.

Patients who have had intravenous bisphosphonates may not be able to receive implants soon after the completion of their course of medicines.

Our jaws continue to grow longer than you would think: sometimes until as late as 21 years of age! Young patients may need to wait until they can receive implants.

Sometimes, additional procedures to build your bone or gums may be indicated to make space for placement of implants. A typical example is when the tooth has been lost a long time ago, leading to deficient bone in the local area. These procedures can be in the form of placement of bio-friendly bone substitutes—often called ‘bone grafts’—that provide a scaffold for your body to make bone. In the upper back teeth, bone can be gained with procedures that gently relocate the structures there—these procedures often come under the umbrella of ‘sinus grafts and sinus lifts’. Gum gain is accomplished in a number of ways with ‘soft tissue grafts’, commonly utilising extra tissues from another area of your mouth. On occasion, these procedures may mean an additional appointment and some extra oral hygiene measures in the immediate post-procedure period.

Your implants are planned keeping in mind a very long-term window of function—usually spanning decades—and with good hygiene, they should last very long. However, with anything that is subjected to severe wear-and-tear, implants may need re-treatment over a period of time, just like knee and hip implants.
